Effect of Kainic Acid on the Transmembrane Potential of the Rabbit Atrial Muscle Cell

Abstract
To investigate electrophysiological effects of kainic acid, an analogue of L-glutamate, on the isolated animal heart, the action potentials of the rabbit atrial muscle cells were recorded before and after superfusion with kainic acid (0.00570-0.0570).
Kainic acid at concentration of 0.008% significantly increased the overshoot potential of the rabbit atrial muscle cells. The maximum diastolic potential of the atrial muscle cell was decreased by administration of kainic acid at dose between 0.008% to 0.01%, whereas it was increased by 0.05% kainic acid. Superfusion of the atrial muscle cells with 0.008% kainic acid resulted in an increase in action potential amplitude. On the other hand no significant changes were observed in action potential duration and rate of spontaneous firing following superfusion of the rabbit atrial muscle cells with kainic acid.
The results of this study indicate that kainic acid can exert direct effect on the rabbit atrial muscle cells.
